UNDERSTANDING SOCIAL PROBLEMS....
OR AT LEAST STARTING TO
OR AT LEAST STARTING TO
My name is Miranda and I am a Junior at the University of Idaho. While studying Sociology 230 I have learned many things and developed new opinions on topics related to society. This blog introduces three chapters that I have found particularly interesting while reading Understand Social Problems by Mooney, Knox, and Schacht. (2009) Not only does this book open your eyes to social problems, but it also makes you feel a bit helpless. There is so much negative that we look past everyday and to read the truth is humbling.
Robert A Heinlein (n.d.) spoke these words that have a truth to them when trying to battle social problems as an individual. I feel that so many feel this way in a losing battle: "My dear, I used to think I was serving humanity . . . and I pleasured in the thought. Then I discovered that humanity does not want to be served; on the contrary it resents any attempt to serve it. So now I do what pleases myself.”
